In November 2008, the Sant Adrià City Council Sant Adrià a referendum to decide the future of Les Tres Xemeneies following the gradual cessation of operations. Of the approximately 2,600 residents who participated, 82% voted in favor of preserving them. Although turnout was around 9% of the registered electorate, the result reflected a clear desire to preserve the complex as a symbol of heritage and identity. The decision halted the demolition proposed by the power company and opened a new round of debate on its cultural and urban reuse.
