Seafront
A continuous coastline that reconnects the city, the river, and the sea

The PDU establishes the continuity of the metropolitan waterfront between Barcelona, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona, guaranteeing public access to the sea and connectivity with the Besòs River Park.

The reorganisation of the coastline and the improvement of public spaces make it possible to establish a continuous seafront promenade and foster a more direct relationship between neighbourhoods and the beach, reinforcing the role of the seafront as a metropolitan public space for civic use. The result is a dynamic, resilient and inclusive landscape that regenerates an environment that has been degraded, strengthens the relationship between city and nature, and prepares the delta to face the environmental challenges of the future.

Beach Reclamation

The intervention focuses on the regeneration and adaptation of the beaches in the area, which, for many years, have been affected by pressure from industry and infrastructures. It involves improving environmental quality, stabilising sand and making the beaches suitable for public use, with the aim of giving this stretch of coastline back to the local community in the best possible conditions. The restoration of the beaches is ecological as well as recreational and has been designed to contribute to the improvement of the coastal system.

Continuous seafront promenade

The intervention creates a continuous waterfront promenade connecting Barcelona, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona. Designed as a high-quality public space for walking, leisure and everyday use, the promenade incorporates seating areas, trees and street furniture. More than a recreational space, it is the defining feature of the development, shaping the new neighbourhood and linking it to the entire metropolitan waterfront.

Relocating infrastructures

The relocation of the Llevant wastewater interceptor and the electrical substation will free up space for the coastal park while improving the functionality of the urban system. The relocation of the interceptor is a strategic intervention in the regeneration of the metropolitan waterfront and a key step in enabling the development of the new neighbourhood set out in the PDU. The interceptor will be moved inland, away from the coastline, to protect it from storm surges and coastal flooding and free up land for urban development (approximately 30% of the total 10.8 km infrastructure). This intervention will allow the seafront promenade to continue uninterrupted and strengthen the overall urban structure. The new position of the interceptor also improves the hydraulic performance of the system and reduces the risks associated with heavy rainfall and wave events.

River restoration

The project strengthens the connection with the Besòs River, furthering its renaturalization process. The “ReViuBesòs” project enhances the riverine areas, boosting their environmental value and biodiversity, and integrates them into the network of public spaces within the new development. The river is no longer a boundary but has become an environmental and landscape asset, connected to the waterfront and fully incorporated into the urban experience.
