A workers’ protest during building work ended with the death of a worker shot by the police.
On 3 April 1973, when the first power plant unit was being built, a workers’ protest escalated into a serious confrontation with Franco’s police. Workers were calling for improvements to their working conditions at a time of mounting social unrest. The police opened fire on the protesters resulting in the death of the 27-year-old worker Manuel Fernández Márquez and leaving several others injured. The incident became an enduring symbol of the labour struggles linked to the area’s industrial development.
