Sant Adrià de Besòs evolved from a farming village into a key industrial centre thanks to its proximity to Barcelona and the Besòs River.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Sant Adrià de Besòs was a small agricultural community whose economy relied on market gardens and irrigated farmland. Its proximity to Barcelona and the Besòs River corridor encouraged industrial development and attracted workers, driving rapid population growth—from 418 inhabitants in 1900 to more than 6,500 in 1930. This expansion transformed the municipality’s social and urban fabric, which evolved into an industrial, working-class town. The arrival of new residents reinforced its diverse character and laid the foundations for an identity shaped by coexistence and industrial development within the Barcelona metropolitan area.
